Who is who in our CoP?

The CoP consists of teacher-educators and teachers of English who take education as a work of heart, and regard the flowering of their students, which will often be lifelong, as the most important kind of success.

Dr T H Choi (principal coordinator)

… is a sociologist of education by training in England (London & Cambridge). Her work embraces the promotion of equity in education and equips teachers of English with a sense of their ability to achieve social justice through participatory engagement with the integrated arts.  She is responsible for steering the CoP to promote the scholarship of teaching and learning at Hong Kong Baptist University.  In particular, she enthuses teacher professional learning through the launch of the Star Teachers’ Club and the conduct of star talks with an emphasis on leading to teach by example.  The model of her creativity, adapting old forms to new uses which relate strongly to the world of her colleagues and teacher-learners, is very precious.

Dr Joshua Chan (coordinator)

... is an applied linguist by training in Hong Kong and England (Oxford & Cambridge).  He has had practical knowledge and experience in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) that he hopes will impact meaningfully on the CoP project at Hong Kong Baptist University.  He is responsible for formulating the deliverables, monitoring the work plans and activities, and evaluating the effectiveness of the CoP for continuous improvement.  He is tasked with an advisory role in a symposium for exchanging ideas in the wider TESOL community.

Dr Cissy Li (coordinator)

... is an applied linguist by training in China, Australia (Sydney) and England (Lancaster).  She is keen to extend her interest in interdisciplinary identity and her recent work on peer-tutoring for university English enhancement to teacher preparation.  With a faculty performance award in service (2017) based at the Language Centre of Hong Kong Baptist University, she willingly joins hands in this inter-departmental collaboration to advise exemplary teachers of English on mentoring matters.

Ms Jane Lo (coordinator)

… holds BA and MA degrees in English literature and religious studies from Canadian universities (University of British Columbia & University of Toronto).  Her fruitful years of teaching at Diocesan Girls’ School have led her to lecture at the Language Centre of HKBU through the summons.  With her aspiration for initial teacher preparation, she eagerly joins the CoP coordinating team to promote the scholarship of teaching and learning.  She is tasked with a managerial role in a leading-edge symposium to conclude the project.

CoP members & invited mentors

... are primary or secondary school teachers of English with diverse talents and a cosmopolitan outlook.  They have had study, internship or work experiences overseas (e.g. England, Wales, Spain, Canada, America and Australia).  They all demonstrated a strong sense of wanting to be teachers in their postgraduate diploma in education (PgDE) or double-degree years at HKBU.  These alumni were prized as star teachers in their field practice.  Each star teacher will be invited to give a talk on a theme of interest, to demonstrate an English lesson from their lived classroom reality, and to serve as mentor to a small group of HKBU double-degree students who are concerned to connect curricular and pedagogical theories with actual classroom practices.
